Writing for beginner readers

A passing comment from a colleague sparked a thought in me – is it possible to create interesting books for beginner readers? Being very limited by only using single sound phonetic words is a challenge in itself so then adding the need for an interesting and cohesive storyline is surely asking for a little too much. Or is it? We want beginner readers to learn to read but more than that we want them to develop a love of reading and an ability to understand what they are reading. So introducing reading through dull as dishwasher books won’t hit the mark for some. Those children who are just happy to be reading will be delighted with being able to read the words and the storyline will be irrelevant. But others want more. I think my writing challenge for today is to find a way to give more. I feel another project coming on…
